Human Rights Caravan and Epicentre of the Triple Crisis – Welcome to Thailand
Being a member of UN body since December 16th, 1946 Thailand is a strong supporter of the United Nations. It has contributed to UN peacekeeping operations and has ratified a range of UN human rights, labour and environment conventions and treaties. Over 25 UN agencies are based in Bangkok, and many agencies maintain regional centres in Bangkok, from which they support operations across Asia (Source: UN website)
Thailand is a country that has never been colonized by any of the Western Forces. It belongs to the oldest inhabited areas – dating from Paleolithic period, about 10.000 years ago. It lies in the heart of Southeast Asia.
Although being a country protecting human rights as a member of UN and beyond it, Thailand faces lots of violations towards the permanent fight for human rights. Just to mention the case of Lawyer Somchai Neelapaijit who mysteriously disappeared.
Thailand has been ratified many covenants; ICCPR, ICESCR, CERD, CEDAW, CAT and CCR. However, it’s not follow up as much as it should. The violations are still going on. For example, according to the article 1in ICCPR and ICESCR, the right to self-determination, not only government has been against Community rights, ethnic minority citizenship, and the violation and abusing in the southern border provinces (this case is still going on and is a very serious problem), but also the multinational cooperation use the authority through the law to violate many local areas and evict them. The multinational companies want to run their business in the tourism that causes a huge damaging to environment and natural resources in Thailand.
The opinion of Asian Human Rights’ forum member: ‘’ At the national level, Thailand also has National Human Rights Commission; I have to say NHRCT is not effective at all! They can’t protect and promote human rights following the adopted principle "Paris Principle". They are many cases that NHRCT should play the major role for human rights protection…’’
From the aspect of Financial Crisis, in 1997 Thailand suffered Asian Financial Crisis due to a collapse of Thai baht. It is also seen as endangered area hit by tsunami (2004) and the statistics says that almost 2/3 of the world’s poor live in Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) and it is a region where ˝ of world’s natural disasters happen.
To be precise, this region is seen as The Epicentre of the Triple Crisis, including the World’s Recession.
The only resolution taking in mind those two issues is to improve the already existing UN resolutions and, in form of debate, bring out a new status quo that will contain progressive ideas and step-by-step suggestions for improvement of the current situation.
